As with any size tuba, it'll depend on how you play it and how you sound on it. Better (IMHO) to look at your musical objectives and use equipment that allows you to achieve them. Example: If a player sounds great (great sound, pristine articulation, even sound through the registers, etc.) on a 4/4 or 5/4 tuba, and less so on a BAT, the choice is clear. However, if a player sounds equally great (same values and objectives as above) on a BAT, it's my opinion that the BAT is the better choice.

Put another way, imagine serving on an audition committee, and some players sound precise with a great sound, and others sound muddy with undefined sounds. Then imagine if you hear some players with a beautiful, huge sound, that is equally precise and clear. Personally, I would go with the player with tremendous abilities on the BAT.

Opinion only!

Walter
