I've played a 1290 since the early 1990s and I love mine. Mine is silverplated and sounds good with good intonation. The horn works great in band and orchestra and will evan do a nice job in a quintet. I use a Conn 3J in quintet for recording but I prefer the sound of the 1290. I have known of a few people who have tried 1290s and not liked them at all but did like mine so I asume as in all tubas there is quite a bit of variation between horns of the same model.
