I took a few lessons with Art Hicks in high school (over a decade ago....how time flies), in conjunction with the Kentucky Governors School for the Arts. I thought I was going to have to quit tuba after the first lesson! We spent the entire lesson on the first two measures of Air Gai....some tune from a Rubank book that I pulled out of my bag because I just knew I would nail it. Hehehehe. He was so adamant about the clarity of attacks, something that was foreign at the time. I am so glad he set the groundwork for me. He helped me to see that consistency is the goal--in practice and performance. I wish I would've kept in touch to let him know what that hour of pestering me about two measures means to me now.

Thanks Art. You'll seriously be missed.

Allen
