Hello Folks -

Several months ago, many of you may recall the announcement of the 1999
TubaMania Composition Contest for Solo Tuba and Tuba-Euph Ensemble (see
the Fall 1998 T.U.B.A. Journal, Volume 26, Number 1, page 19 for
details...)

I'm pleased to announce the three finalist compositions:

Toward The Millennium - A Fanfare in Celebration by Barton Cummings

The Manic Tubist by Brett Miller

Fanfare for a Vagabond by Jason Waddell

Out of these 3 compositions, the winning piece will be given it's World
Premiere performance on the Opening Gala concert at the 1999 TubaMania
Conference in Sydney, Australia. The solo part will be performed by
yours truly, and the ensemble will be the University of North Carolina
at Greensboro Tuba Band, under the direction of Dr. Dennis AsKew.

In addition to the performance at TubaMania, the winning piece will also
be recorded this fall by the UNCG Tuba Band, with Dennis conducting, and
myself again playing the solo, on a CD the UNCG Tuba Band is doing
featuring works written for the tuba-euph ensemble. This CD should be
available by December of 1999. Please contact Dennis for more details on
that.

Many thanks to all of the composers who submitted works, and
congratulations to the 3 finalists! All of the works submitted were of
very high quality, and we should feel fortunate that such gifted
composers take an interest in writing for the euphonium and tuba.

Now comes the hard part - picking the winner!

Take care,

Kelly O.
