I've heard some manufacturers used to have pistons made out of copper so that the piston would wear intentionally, it was easier to replate and hone pistons than it was to lap the hard brass cylinder.

I have seen an older Sanders tuba with titainium (sp?) rotors. Too expensive to market, I guess.

I don't think having the piston or rotors made of a different material would affect the sound much.
