I really have to work at the beginning to pull off the F (but I can). I warned that my advice is weird, because my particular F is an extraordinary one, and is capable of such. The big payoff is in the melodic sections later in the piece. With the F, there is much more center, and just as much richness and carrying power. As with the choice of a tuba for ANY piece, it is all a compromise. I (again) don't think that using an F on this piece is a good choice for very many people. It is sort of the same consideration that one would have to make if he were REQUIRED to do the entire "Pictures" tuba part on one tuba..."hmmm, which one to use?..."
