I ran into a similar situation when recently choosing my new F tuba. I had narrowed my choice's to the B&S and the Meinl Weston 45SLP. I also tried the MW 45s and the Hilgers model rotory, but I liked the piston model better. The B&S F's "to me" have a beautiful F tuba sound that is close to being unmatched. However on the several new ones I tried out the low range did not compare to the MW 45SLP. I ended up getting a 45SLP with a beautiful full open sound and great intonation from Dillon Music. Give one of the SLP's a blow sometime, I think you will be surprised.
One good thing is that I do have my orchestra's B&S F here at home so I can compare them all the time.
