Russell,
I'm a little surprised. All this hoopla of response, and no one asked what sort of bass trombone you are using to double on. This makes as much difference as what sort of mouthpiece you're using. Every piece of the equation is important. My doubling got much better when I found a bass trombone that complemented my tuba, and my playing tendencies. Then I found the right mouthpiece, and have used it for 14 years. I play on a Thein MC-light. This mouthpiece was originally developed for the bass 'bone player in the Hamburg Symphony, a Helleberg-style mouthpiece that he could use both on his bass trombone in Bb, and on his contrabass trombone in F. I paid 240 Deutsche Marks for it, gold-plated,($125.00 US), and it has been worth every penny. This also makes an excellent mouthpiece for the smaller F tuba.
