I do the last 2 you recommended and have great success. I have tried to do the first one you recommended in the past and it actually made it worse for me. When the tuba sits in my living room where I can see it and I know I should be putting in more time, I actually get spiteful and practice less. Instead, I put the horn back in the basement and go down and grab it when I am ready for it.

My wife uses the "all I want is 15 minutes each day" trick on her students and she says it works great. My favorite is to "take the day off" by playing candy music instead of the usual regimen. I don't necessarily cover the fundementals as much as I should that day, and maybe skip recital/audition preparation also, but those candy music days help to keep music fun and fresh for me. My favorites to play on those days are anything Bach and the short tunes in the back of the trumpet Arban's.
