i have played the 3302 for over 3 1/2 years and the Miraphone 191 now since last October and it is a 5 valve gold brass with gold brass leadpipe. My conclusions are as follows:
1. the 3302 has slightly better intonation and it is easier to get to the 1st valve tuning slide. the only bad note for me on the 191 is the D below the staff and it has to be played 3rd.
2. the 191 5 valve to me has a fuller and richer sound that projects better and it resonates throughout the whole tuba and the 3302 just doesnt(you can really hear it in a large performance hall and around other tubas when in a section)
4. the 3302 is around $600 cheaper but to me i play a tuba for the sound and projction ability of the tuba first and then all other things 2nd
5. the valves on the miraphone are rotary but are just as fast as the 3302 and the throw is shorter, the piston is cleaner technically but its a small technical problem that is easily overcome. u just have to tongue a little more sharper or pointier to make the runs as clean. this is a problem between all rotor and piston tubas.
