Rick, you've seen where I live, so you know I can't speak authoritatively on the subject of annoying the neighbors.
But years ago a friend of mine, an acoustical engineer, set up a practice room in his new home. His walls and ceiling were constructed as doubles--that is, two parallel rows of studs separated by an airspace for insulation. Same with the ceiling joists. His contention was that all the insulation in the world doesn't prevent conduction by joists and studs; only isolation does. He was a trumpeter and you couldn't hear a sound outside of his practice studio. I suspect that his contention is even more to the point for low frequencies.
