I'll be honest, I don't know much about this, but painting them doesn't seem like such a good idea to me...my Sophomore year, we wanted our sousaphones to look good for Giants Stadium (Marching band championships), so we took some cleaner, paper towels, and scrubbed the hell out of them. That also may not have been a good idea, but it worked.
