When I was in the service some 30 years ago we got egg crates from the mess hall and thumb tacked them to the walls and ceiling of our rehersal hall. Gave it a sort of "Star Wars" look like the inside of a space ship. Didn't do a whole lot for the sound but it looked real cool. Tried blankets. They didn't really do much either. I think a fallout shelter in you back yard would be your best bet.
