According the B&H/besson company the 982 takes the full leadpipe lenght to reach the valve bore of .689, whereas the the 981 has a much faster progression to that borepresent day versions have the leadpipes placed exactly identical. An employé of a London company told that they soldered a lot of carrying rings to the 981 concert model tubas. (I might have made a posting on this board on that topic within the last few weeks).

The difference is very noticeable. The 982 is intended to break up at a common f. It takes some extra effort to make the 981 break up. I have taken it up to a fff of my brass band surroundings with the sound staying full and round/ smooth or whatever the term might be.
