A Humes and Berg Symphonic Aluminum mute (not the cheap stonelined ones) will do an excellent job of altering the tone while still being perfectly audible and playing in tune They come in two sizes - contoured (3/4 to 4/4) and large bore (large 4/4 to 5/4+). I sold both of mine several months ago because I no longer have much of a need for performance oriented mutes. Brasswind among others sell them.
