I suspect that the unfortunate reality is that a) if you have an accident with sufficient force to activate the air bag and b) the force of the air bag is sufficient to dent the bell of your tuba, then it is likely that having the accident without having the tuba strapped in would result in the tuba "bouncing" around the inside of the car, increasing the likelihood of injury to both the tuba and yourself. So the seconds after the impact may represent a no-win situation.
Make sure the tuba is somewhere that it won't become a hazard by moving around in a crash - if that's a spot where it won't be impacted by the airbag, or where it may even survive an impact - Bonus.
