When I think of the term "stiff" as applied to playing characteristics of tubas, I think of Yamaha. My experiences: They can only make ONE type of timbre-- almost impossible for the player to color the sound. I find them also so tightly 'slotted' that it's near impossible to stray from the built in note slots (finessing intonation, bending notes, etc.) Stiff.
