A while back, my teacher recommended that I try cold cream. Occasionally, there are build-up problems on the end of the slide, but not on the joint. From the looks of the responses you've gotten, it looks like there are all sorts of options. Personally, I've never found anything that was 100% satisfactory in the build-up department; it may just be an inherent problem with the slide apparatus. I would try to find something that was at least easy to clean up if it does form a blob on your slide.
