Years ago Carnegie-Mellon University had two Boland and Fuchs (Graslitz) tubas that were identical except for the bells. One had a 19 inch bell and the other had a 13 inch bell.
The tubing before the bell section was identical on both horns. The small belled instrument was much easier to play in the high register. One could produce 20 different open tones which were well centered. The large belled instrument became less centered past the 10 or 12th open tone. Both instruments sounded the same up to mf level. Past that level the small belled one got brighter and would go 'blap' if one played a forte note. The large belled tuba didn't get bright til triple forte was used. The intonation was identical on both, indicating that the manufacturer had been carefull to make the proper tapers in the lead pipe and bell section.
