This debate comes up pretty often and I don't get it. I went to a small private college where all music majors were treated as performance majors whether they were music ed., music business, or bachelor of arts majors. I know some folks view the music ed. degree as "lesser" than a perfromance degree, but I know many music ed. guys that are really great players and several performance majors who are very poor musicians. How well you play depends on how hard you practice and how good your teacher is. Taking a few extra classes to ensure employment in the future shouldn't hurt too bad. In fact, you could get your teaching certification and then do your masters in performance (I did). Some states recognize a graduate degree for raises even if it is not in education. I know everyone talks a lot on here about being a professional player, but I love being a teacher and doing my little side gigs. I wouldn't trade places with Pokorney for any price.
