Well, my take on it is they see that sousaphones are put together that way in pictures and magazines, so you can see the bell and all of the body. When I marched in the 4th of July parade, my band was the only band that wore the sousaphone the correct way, whice is how you described, the bottom branch by your right hip. When I played one that way, it was really hard to play, because I had to face to the left, and I couldn't see the drum majorand it just looked totally ridiculous. So, if you get a chance, show the sousasphone players how to put them together, they will be more comfortable, and it will look alot better.
P.S Don't let the director call them tubas! They are Sousas! I hate that..... :)
