I haven't seen the Sears dial caliper, but I strongly suggest that you use a plastic caliper around musical instruments (I had a steel caliper before I bought another plastic one, and I can state, from bitter experience, that the sharp, steel jaws scratch up brass very easily). For about the same price MSC (http://www.mscdirect.com) has several plastic dial calipers to choose from (in both metric and English units). They are accurate to better than .001", and even come in colors.
