I agree that most of the CC tubists including older ones, even heads of music departments never play softer that mezzo forte and most of them play out of tune. I have pointed that out in some of the groups in which I play and they get a bit softer. They also never really play FFF as on can on a very large EEE/BBb tuba that I use. The intonation problem is not so easy to solve because 3, 4 and 5 valve noncompensating instruments are very much out of tune, especially those that are copies of the old Yorks.

I would guess that a young Arnold Jacobs or Bill Bell would not play the obsolete instruments so often used today.
