After teaching high school students for a couple of years, I have found that the biggest problem is simply not knowing the fingerings or not being able to read bass clef. A lot of tuba students switch from other instruments such as trumpet and never really learn tuba fingerings. Also, when they play in the band it is very easy to hide in the overall sound of the group.
