If a student is having difficulties with a rhythmic concept, surely that difficulty is with the concept, not the instrument? Therefore, trying it on a different instrument is not the answer: they'll just carry that difficulty over. The only exeption I can think of is if there are other problems too (eg the tone production is difficult, the range is too high and you're asking him/her to concntrate on rhythms). In this case, working on a more familiar instrument (in particular clapping) may help.

Piano lessons can be a very good starting point for visualising/learning intervals, chords, etc; for coordination and much more, however.
