5. 8, The airline was very helpful, only damage came from the Munich airport and they were quick to send me a check for a new case!
On a side note, in Munich, I had the luck of sitting in the perfect seat to watch the instruments being loaded. It answered the age old question : what is the range of a tuba/trumpet/ horn/trombone? About 15 ft. and through the cargo door. Other than that they gave the cases special treatment at JFK and Brussels.
