I was charged $200 at the gate once trying to check my tubas and gig bag as luggage. Boy did my credit card take a hit. CC tuba in a flight case, "oversize" $50, F tuba in a flight case, "oversize" $50, CC gig bag with clothes and F gig bag inside, "oversize" $50, and my CC flight case was over weight, $50. This was in Baltimore and I was flying United. On the way back, no charge, because the ticket agent didn't charge for oversize and had me repack my CC flight case to meet weight requirements.
