Harder is better. Glass would probably produce the best resonance for a tuba but would be a real pain to work with. You guys can get as technical as you want, but simply put, brass is the choice of the instrument maker because it's plentiful, easy to form and bond, and resists most forms of common corrosion associated with human contact.
