I think it is common for people to "quit blowing" when their normal practice situation is in a small room that deadens, instead of resonating with, their sound. I know that when I get in a great big room that resonates with my sound, I suddenly start to make a whole lot more sound. The Jacobs story is really interesting, how he approached and solved the problem.
