If I had to buy only horn for band, orchestra, quintet and brass ensembles, I'd go with a horn that could play really well in all registers. Some models I'd throw out:

Meinl Weston 2145 and 2155
Rudy Meinl 3/4, piston 4/4 and 5/4
Conn 52 and 56J
Miraphone 188 and 186
Alexander 4/4
Canadian Brass 50
Willson 5/4 (although that may be a bit too big)
any York or other Rusk/Dillon cut that's not a 6/4 (Including Dale's B&M)

That's pretty much it. Hope this helps.
