Doug,

I'm going to tell you that there is a real problem with every F tuba I've ever played: Their is nothing close to perfect.

I own a Yamaha 621 F, the little 3/4 5 valve model. It plays really well and evenly through all registers, but there is no power there when needed for orchestral excerpts. However, if you get bigger, then it loses its ability to play the lighter stuff with the ease that the little F's have. I personally do not like any German F tuba that I've played simply because I am not the best person when it comes to relaxing, so I tend to stay away from those.

I just wish that there was a middle ground F somewhere. Maybe I should consider Eb? Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

Sincerely,

Andy Smith
