When I was in high school I was a lifeguard, ran track, and was very active. Through my freshman year of college I gained about 60 pounds, and while my technique and understanding of music was advancing, something about my playing was not.
Now, almost back to the state of physical fitness I was at in high school, I can really see the impact your body has on your playing.
In short, though, if you're "large", I don't think it has to be detrimental to your playing... however, getting in better shape certainly won't hurt your playing.
