Every knows that you can't trust a drummer's intelligence. I always set my tuba down on the bell, and I never had a problem. It was that one day in band that a drummer goofing off, doing what he does best, ran into my tuba while it was balancing on its bell and the edge of a chair. The tuba fell directly on the valves shattering two out of the four. My tuba is a 40 year old instrument with the very first type of rotary valves. The guy that repaired it luckily had two spare parts for my instrument, only because someone junked a tuba that was similar in make as mine. If he didn't have the parts, he would have had to ship it to germany to get the valves hand made. Don't set it on the bell when there are other people around for the tuba's safety. It is fine to let it rest on its bell in your own practice room where you are the only one around but not anywhere else. Just a little hint!
