I was also told that just the pressure of resting a tuba on its bell can cause slight deformation of the bell over time. It seems unlikely to me considering the weight of a tuba. The greatest risk does seem to be from someone stepping on the bell or knocking it over. I always use my K&M tuba stand and make sure it is placed away from any main traffic areas during intermission or other breaks.
