Wow, Mark, that's a surprise! But I'm not a materials scientist, so I'm working out of pure ignorance.
If I take two bars, one of 1080 steel and one of C350 brass (which costs about the same as T304 stainless but is a LOT easier to machine!) and strike them, the steel rings considerably louder and longer than than the brass.
Originally, I'd considered silver-soldering up a brass cup and filling it with lead as a weight, but since lead is even deader than brass, it sounds as if it wouldn't even work as well as brass.
Is this really true?
