Tony Clements told me something interesting. He said that it helps, while playing a "German" F tuba, if you record yourself on the horn. He says that that helps to instill confidence that those questionable notes actually don't sound very different, if at all. In other words, it simply becomes a matter of just trusting that those notes don't sound as bad as they feel. Seems to me, that may be an effective way to get over a certain mental obstacle. Believe me, Tony is no fan of "stuffy" horns.
