I agree that the case is the best place. There is no place for a case in an area of the floor where rehearsal takes place, especially if your band room is as small as mine.
I have dicscovered that more of the sight inhibited students kick or glide step more than step on instruments. Hence my preference to lay down as opposed to placing on the bell.

I wish I had stronger bells like your york master.

Seriously, and no sarcasm intended.

With much respect to your experience, (which I acknowledge is more than mine),I will still preach laying on the back when no case is near.

By the way, for everyone else. I appreciate those who present well thought responses. This response from Rick Denny is well appreciated by me.
