That gob of RTV is an example of a good idea done wrong. From my experience, the new Conn CC tubas are very sensitive to the least little air leak at those quick disconect joints. Just the thinnest film of RTV (silicone) will do the job best.

It will seal the joint. It can be easily pealed off and replaced at the next maintenance interval. It doesn't dry out and evaporate away to leave a leak. If you are a tinkerer who is taking the horn apart and bathing it every 2 or 3 months, then lanolin would be my suggestion. I try to make every attempt to put just the littlest amount that will do the job. Humans make mistakes and think more is better.
