My suspicion is the rotary Culbertson is different from the piston one.
On my piston-valves 6/4 Holton I use:
PT-48 often, I just like it's sound
Mirafone Rose Orchestra C-9 generally, best overall balance of core/breadth for me
Dillon Geib G5-Bronze, when I want even darker and can afford less core to the sound (more breadth)
Mirafone Rose Orchestra TU25 when I want more focus and can sacrifice breadth

the key for these big grand orchestral tubas is a funnel-shaped mouthpiece,
as big as possible, though a lot of fine fine tubists seem to prefer the smaller of the Helleberg-types. Conversely, a lot of players use the PT-88 you mentioned.
Is there a reason you're considering changing?
