I've been astonished twice now, by talented students who didn't understand how to use a metronome. It took a long time with one before he said, "Oh, you mean I'm not supposed to be able to hear the metronome?" ...he was playing right _after_ he heard the beat, instead of right with it (and had been doing that for decades.) The second one I ran into, I knew what the problem was and was able to tell him that he wasn't supposed to wait until he heard the beat to play, but be exactly with it, and we fixed that right away! It's amazing the concepts that people occasionally get, that are incorrect, but it takes so long to figure out where the mismatch is.
