The last time I drove back from Canada was on Sept 15th of last year, which was right after they re-opened the border after Sept 11th. Getting through US customs was a very long process; they were opening the trunk of every single car and examining all the contents, without letting anyone out of the car. They opened both our horn cases and damn near dumped the bells out on the pavement. Then they partially re-zipped them and sort of stuffed them back in the trunk. We had to stop 300 feet later, take everything back out of the trunk, put it together properly, and repack the trunk. There was no mention of importing stuff or of duty....they were looking for bombs. (just like they do now in airports, on elderly men and women who are in wheelchairs and can't walk.)
