My advice is to stay away from the Rubank. I don't like the book and the students I've seen that use it don't tend to advance very quickly. My recommendation would be the book "Foundation to Tuba and Sousaphone Playing" by William Bell. This book is amazing! It has sections covering everything from playing the open notes of the horn to advanced etudes and excerpts. This is the book I use with all my students that are beginners. It is published by Carl Fischer and is still available, to the best of my knowledge. What's really great about this book is the writing, done by Bell, prior to each study. It is like a mini lesson. Some of the concepts are a bit out of date, depending on who you talk to, but the ideas presented here are a wonderful first step.

My opinion for what it's worth...
