I have seen some good books listed. If your son is going into a class situation, or you want another opinion, use the Essential Elements 2000 book.

Although the book is a class method, it also carries a play-along CD set, and it covers technique, rhythm, and tuning in a parrallel style. It is weak on the 4th valve combinations, but it is useful for beginners.

Another suggestion that hasn't been stated is the use of a tuba stand. I am a DEG fan, but there are others on the market as well. This will help him work more on technique, and less on holding a tuba.

Good luck

Tom
