DCI uses both. A contra is basically a tuba in the key of "G." They used to be horns with piston and rotor horns. Then in 1978 DCI legalized 2 upright valves on bugles. In 1990 corps began to use 3 valve bugles. This is when they got 3 valves. in 2000 DCI legailed horns in any key. Now Some corps use BBb tubas.
