What helped me was listening to lots of music. Not just CD's, but also live performances. Listening to CD's repeatedly and picking out different aspects to concentrate on each time such as the principal trumpeter or the unity of the violin section or perhaps the blend of the woodwinds are good places to start. Playing along with the recordings also helps. If you can, get ahold of the score and follow along as they play. This allows you to see how people interpret the rhythms on the page. Dotted eight sixteens, triplets, even repeating quarter notes are better understood.
