I was getting scratches with mylar and teflon. I finally found a really good solution.
Take a big piece of brass shim stock (0.010" or thinner). Lay it over the dented area and tape it in place. Apply the magnet with no pad, keeping the shim stock stationary. Any scratches get put in the shim stock; the instrument underneath is undamaged.
Admittedly you have to work "blind", but this way really does work.
