One of my former teachers, Ev Gilmore (now retired from the Dallas Symphony),
drilled into me the importance of taking auditions. He wanted his students to
play EVERY audition that they were invited to. I totally agree.
Each audition is a unique learning experience.
There are precious few audition opportunities for my instrument (tuba) and
fewer still for yours (euphonium).
As you know, the first step is to be invited - which means preparing a
successful tape/CD - which is another useful 'learning experience'.
For this vacancy, MANY tapes will be screened, but only a few will be invited
for the live rounds.
The live-round applicants will have their travel expenses paid for.
So, my advice is to do your best and worry about whether or not you want the job
afterwards.
(Oh yeah, Ev Gilmore was a former Field Band member.)

If you click on the link and then click on "roster" .......
and then click on "support and operations", you will see that that there
is a full staff to handle the office, library, arranging, tour advancing, and
other duties. As Chuck mentioned, most of the performers help with packing-up
the trucks after each concert.

During my years with the Army Field Band, we performed in all 50 states [multiple
times], as well as the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, Holland,
Belgium, France, Germany, So. Korea, Japan, and India.

It's not a bad gig.
