CORRECTION: I was at work when I wrote the post above, and memory did not serve me well. Now that I'm at home, here's the correct info:

The RCA recording was conducted by Igor Buketoff, with the New Philharmonia Orchestra (would that be Fletcher on tuba in the 1960's?), the Cathedral Choir and Children's Choir of St. Ambrose, Central Band of the Royal Air Force, and Guns of the Kings's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery (no digitally reproduced cannons here!). Even the bells for this recording are not mere orchestral percussion instruments--they're authentic Russian church bells, recorded at the Russian cathedral spires where they hang and dubbed into the recording. So I don't think that this recording of 1812 leaves any of the ingredients out as far as performing forces are concerned. The LP catalog number is LSC-3051.
