There is validity in both Joe's and Micky's viewpoints.
Micky's statement, "Perhaps they [the performer] read a book and were given an insight into a composer's life that spoke to them." In his post about the ITEA Journal article, Micky modestly omitted that it was HE who performed the Penderecki Capriccio---FOR Mr. Penderecki himself. Obviously, from the comments that Mr. Penderecki made after hearing Micky's performance, there was new meaning given to those octave displacements in the score and how to interpret them.
