I've been thinking about Joe's post. Here's a story full of name-dropping that applies:

This summer, at the Big Brass Bash, Keating Johnson was sitting just behind me and to the right. Gene Pokorny and Chris Olka were sitting to my immediate left. (It was a humbling and very educational experience.) When each of these tubists warmed up, it was a quiet, deliberate warm up. And, it was hard to hear because of the teenaged boys who were warming up across the room by blatting every piece of music they could remember. I'm sure these boys thought that they were cool and muy, muy macho.

Occasionally, a tubist may really pop a low note because that is the way he or she interprets the music. But, when that low note is a blatt; I suspect it's a little of that teenage macho resurfacing.
